El trabajo de Julio Lugon se centra en el arte sonoro y conceptual. Incluye instalación, performance, electrónica, traducción de bio-datos y música experimental. Uno de sus enfoques es la inclusión de seres no humanos (como las plantas) y la interacción de los procesos tecnológicos en la producción de conocimiento. Sus proyectos actuales abordan temas de la filosofía contemporánea y los retos derivados de las preocupaciones sociales y medioambientales. Tiene un máster en Sound Studies de la UdK en Berlín y fue galardonado con el primer premio Sonotopia 2019 en Bonn. Sus trabajos se han presentado en Europa, Sudamérica y Asia. Opera bajo el seudónimo de Pira Lemú como músico experimental, dj y es conductor del programa online Radio Jurassic Park.

Julio Lugon is an interdisciplinary artist whose work focuses on sound and conceptual art including installation, performance, electronics, biological data translation and graphics. He is interested in the integration of non-human beings (such as plants) into his work and their interactions with scientific-technical processes of knowledge production. His current projects deal with philosophical topics as with the challenges arising from social and ecological concerns. He has a master in Sound Studies from the UdK Berlin and was awarded first-prize at “Bonn Hoeren – Sonotopia 2019,” the sound art competition by the Beethoven Stiftung in Bonn, Germany. His works have been presented in Europe, South America and Asia. He operates with the alias Pira Lemu as an experimental musician, DJ and is host of the DIY show Radio Jurassic Park.

Von der Malerei kommend liegen die Schwerpunkte der künstlerischen Arbeit von Julio Lugon heute im Bereich Klangkunst, experimentelle Musik und Konzeptkunst. Seine Arbeiten bewegen sich zwischen Installationskunst, Performance, Klangarbeiten, Recherche, Online-Radio und Bilder, Lugon tritt aber auch als experimenteller Musiker und DJ auf. 2019 schloss er sein Masterstudium »Sound Studies« an der UDK in Berlin ab. Seine aktuellen Projekte befassen sich mit Themenfeldern aus der Philosophie ebenso wie mit den Herausforderungen, die aus gesellschaftlichen, sozialen und ökologischen Fragestellungen entstehen. Ein Fokus liegt auf der Integration von nichtmenschlichen Wesen (wie z.B. Pflanzen) in die künstlerische Arbeit und deren Wechselwirkungen mit wissenschaftlich-technischen Prozessen bzw. Denkweisen. Seine Installation »Aristotle’s Jungle« z.B. stellt eine Art Biofeedbacksystem dar, das aus elektrischen Ventilatoren, Glühlampen, Lautsprechern und einer Reihe von Zimmerpflanzen besteht, die in einen spekulativen Dialog treten. Die biorhythmischen Signale der Pflanzen, die er über die elektrischen Widerstände an den Blättern misst, aktivieren und deaktivieren — gesteuert über einen Mikrocontroller und eine selbstentwickelte Relaisstation — die im Raum verteilten Ventilatoren und Lampen. Über seinen Arbeitsansatz schreibt Lugon: Gegenwärtig beschäftigt mich das Spannungsverhältnis zwischen Kultur und Natur. Ich denke, dass Klang eine eigenständige Instanz ist, die uns die Möglichkeit gibt, die Unterschiede zwischen dem Natürlichen und dem Künstlichen zu durchbrechen. Die Vorstellung, dass Klang eine eigene Perspektive besitzt, eröffnet viele neue Differenzierungen (…) und multipliziert die Möglichkeiten der Arbeit mit klangbezogenem Material. Meine Arbeit zielt darauf ab, mit einfachen formalen Ideen zu arbeiten, die sich zu einem zunächst leicht zugänglichen Werk entwickeln, um dann eine tiefere Diskussion stattfinden zu lassen.

Artist Statement

En años recientes, he estado explorando una idea presente en ciertos campos de la ciencia y la política, donde la naturaleza se presenta como algo opuesto a la cultura, y estoy intentando cuestionar esa bifurcación hacia una comprensión en la que los mundos natural y artificial se conciban como uno solo.

La intuición me dice que tanto el mundo del arte sonoro como el ámbito sónico podrían estar habitados por seres dispuestos a ofrecernos la posibilidad de difuminar la distinción entre un entorno natural y uno artificial. Esta noción del sonido como un agente capaz de tener su propio punto de escucha abre muchos nuevos ecosistemas donde pueden activarse colaboraciones ficticias y artísticas entre entidades humanas y no humanas.

Mi trabajo busca operar mediante el uso de ideas formales accesibles, moldeadas en manifestaciones artísticas, para que a partir de ellas pueda generarse eventualmente una discusión más profunda.

In recent years, I’ve been exploring an idea found in certain areas of science and politics, where nature is presented as something opposed to culture, and I’m trying to question that bifurcation toward an understanding in which the natural and artificial worlds are conceived as one.

Intuition tells me that both the world of sound art and the sonic realm could be inhabited by beings willing to offer us the possibility of blurring the distinction between a natural and an artificial environment. This notion of sound as an agent capable of having its own point of listening opens up many new ecosystems where fictional and artistic collaborations between human and non-human entities can be activated.

My work seeks to operate through the use of accessible formal ideas, shaped into artistic manifestations, so that from them a deeper discussion may eventually emerge.

In den letzten Jahren habe ich begonnen, eine Idee zu erforschen, die in verschiedenen Bereichen der Wissenschaft und Politik auftaucht – die Vorstellung, dass Natur und Kultur Gegensätze seien. Ich versuche, diese Trennung zu hinterfragen und ein Verständnis zu entwickeln, in dem das Natürliche und das Künstliche als ein zusammenhängendes Kontinuum begriffen werden.

Meine Intuition sagt mir, dass sowohl die Welt der Klangkunst als auch der Klangraum von Wesen bewohnt sein könnten, die uns die Möglichkeit eröffnen, die Grenzen zwischen natürlicher und künstlicher Umgebung zu verwischen. Die Vorstellung von Klang als einem eigenständigen Akteur mit einer eigenen Hörperspektive eröffnet neue Ökosysteme, in denen fiktionale und künstlerische Kooperationen zwischen menschlichen und nicht-menschlichen Entitäten entstehen können.

Meine Arbeit bewegt sich dabei im Feld zugänglicher formaler Ideen, die sich in künstlerischen Manifestationen verdichten – als Ansatzpunkte, aus denen sich tiefere Diskurse entfalten können.
